Harwell Science and Innovation Campus shortlisted for best public-private partnership

May 14th 2026

Harwell Science and Innovation Campus has been shortlisted for Best Public-Private Partnership at the Life Science, Tech and Research Clusters Awards, recognising the strength of its collaborative model and its role in driving scientific excellence, economic growth, and long-term societal impact.

The nomination reflects the success of the long-standing partnership between the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), and Brookfield. Together, they have supported significant growth across the 700-acre campus, helping position Harwell as one of the UK’s leading science and innovation hubs.

Recent achievements include the development of over 600,000 sq ft of new laboratory space and the arrival of more than 60 new organisations across key sectors such as life sciences, space, energy, and quantum technologies. The campus has also attracted over £2 billion in inward investment and continues to expand its specialist incubator programmes.

In addition to its commercial and research success, Harwell Campus has led major public engagement initiatives, including Open Week—which welcomed 18,000 visitors—and the Light Project celebrating its 80th anniversary. It is also pioneering innovation in areas such as neuroinclusive laboratory design and sustainable energy, with the introduction of the UK’s first science campus Smart Grid.

The campus’s Lumen development has also received further recognition, being shortlisted for three additional awards for its inclusive and forward-thinking workspace design.
