To boldly go: exploring the quantum materials universe with neutrons and muons
Come along to R22 Pickavance Lecture Theatre or join online to hear from Prof. Stephen J. Blundell, University of Oxford, on the subject of the quantum materials universe.
The properties of the universe seem to be determined by a fixed set of fundamental constants. We cannot rerun the history of the universe with different sets of constants to see what would happen. But what if we could? Using the new science of quantum materials, each crystal of a new substance hives us a new universe with a new set of constants, laws, and emergent particles.
In this lecture, I will describe how neutrons and muons give us a window of these new universes, allow us to see how quantum effects can be revealed through studying the microworld, and how the technologies developed through these new avenues of research might impact everyone.
If you are interested in attending either online or in person, please get in touch below to express your interest.
This year, the RAL Lawson Lecture is being included in the schedule of the ISIS 40th Anniversary.
This lecture is followed by a reception at 17:00 in the R22 Coffee Lounge and marquee – All welcome.
