Harwell Connect @ Rosalind Franklin Institute

May 22 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

We’re delighted to announce the next host of the Harwell Connect event series: The Rosalind Franklin Institute.

Date: Thursday 22 May

Time: 15:00 – 16:30

Join us to hear from Dr Michele Darrow who leads the Franklin’s new Quantitative Biology Across Scales Challenge, and Chloe Cheng, a final year Franklin PhD student who’s working with Dr Darrow on an interdisciplinary research project.

There’ll also be the opportunity to take a ‘window tour’ of the labs – your behind-the-scenes access to the areas where cutting-edge research takes place.

With time for networking and refreshments included, this is a great opportunity to meet fellow campus members and discover the work of the Franklin.

This event is open to campus members only. If you experience issues registering with the app, contact the team here.

About the speakers:

Dr Michele Darrow leads the Franklin’s new Quantitative Biology Across Scales Challenge. The aim of the challenge is to combine innovative imaging techniques and AI in ways that will allow researchers to flexibly image across large and small scales – from seeing whole organs to views of cells and the intricate structures within them – and with these, to transform how doctors treat patients. They will initially be focussing their efforts on imaging the placenta and are interested in pursuing other research projects related to women’s health.

Chloe Cheng – The goal of her project is to study the developmental patterns and the structural/spatial distribution of mitochondria and synaptic vesicles in the hippocampus. Electron Microscopy (EM) and Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) are used to map and analyse these organelles, and an automated pipeline combining citizen science and machine learning is developed to process the large and complex EM data.

About The Rosalind Franklin Institute:

Established in 2018 by ten top UK universities, The Rosalind Franklin Institute (RFI) is dedicated to developing tomorrow’s life science innovations through technology development and needle-point research. It creates disruptive technologies that can reveal the inner-workings of life, from pea-sized tumours through to picometre-scale atoms. The state-of-the-art tools and projects accelerate the development of new medicines, advance medical diagnostics and push forward the frontiers of microbiology to deepen out understanding of human health and disease. RFI collaborates with partners from across industry and science to ensure their critical research has a real impact in the world.
