MitoRx Publishes Study on AP39’s Effectiveness in Reducing Obesity

October 17th 2024

MitoRx Therapeutics has published a study in Pharmacological Research demonstrating that its mitochondrial-targeted sulfide-donor compound, AP39, significantly reduces weight gain and fatty liver. This study is the first to explore the potential of mitochondrial sulfide donors in addressing obesity-related disorders.

AP39 was found to reduce weight gain by 32%, lower triglycerides, and decrease inflammatory markers, suggesting it affects lipid metabolism through the mTOR/SREBP-1/SCD1 pathway. MitoRx is developing next-generation compounds that not only combat obesity but also protect muscle, potentially addressing muscle loss associated with existing obesity treatments like GLP-1 receptor agonists.

Dr Jon Rees, CEO of MitoRx, emphasised the importance of this research in providing a new therapeutic avenue for metabolic diseases while mitigating side effects associated with current treatments. The lead author, Dr Aneta Stachowicz, highlighted the significance of this work in advancing innovative treatments for metabolic disorders through the modulation of mitochondrial signalling.
