DESCRIPTION:Our Inside Diamond open day events offer the chance for members of the public to visit the facility and see inside our particle accelerator and experimental laboratories. You will also meet some of the scientists that use Diamond and can ask them about the work they do – everything from viral proteins to engine parts and ancient texts. \nDate: Saturday 25 October 2025 \nThere are several starting times for the visits which you can select during the booking process: typically 09:30\, 11:00\, 12:45 and 14:15. \n\nClick here for ballot entry\n\nBallot entry closes at midnight on Sunday 21 September 2025. \nThese events are very popular and we have a limit on the number of visitors we can accommodate so we operate a ballot system to offer a fair allocation of spaces. For this reason\, only one entry is permitted per household. \nA typical visit will take approximately 2 – 2.5 hours and will consist of: \n\nAn introductory talk giving a general overview of Diamond and what it is used for.\nA guided tour – including a trip to see inside the synchrotron and our laboratories (please note that extensive walking will be involved).\nAn opportunity to talk to Diamond employees and ask them about their work and the facility.\n\nAdvice / Restrictions: \n\nDue to the size of the facility\, there will be extensive walking involved during the guided tour and as such\, we advise all visitors to wear comfortable footwear.\nDue to the nature of the facility\, we do not admit visitors under the age of 6 and we recommend that the visit is more suitable for adults and children aged 11+.\nThere are a few restrictions due to health and mobility issues\, although we ask that you inform us of any special requirements during registration so we can ensure suitable tour routes are available.\nPlease be aware that it can feel quite warm in the Synchrotron building so be prepared to remove extra layers/coats during tours.\n\n\nClick here for ballot entry\n\nBallot entry closes at midnight on Sunday 21 September 2025.

SUMMARY:Training Course: In-Situ Experiments & Digital Volume Correlation
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering theory and computer-based practical works using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D where two solutions are implemented. \nDate: Wednesday 15 October – Thursday 16 October \nTime: 09:00 – 17:00 \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nDigital Volume Correlation (DVC) is a powerful experimental technique that computes 3D full-field displacement and strain maps from volumes images acquired during a deformation process of a material. DVC is the 3D extension of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) which was first described four decades ago. The emergence of DVC started early 2000s with the use of X-ray CT combined with in situ rigs to capture 3D morphological changes with time. Although the DVC algorithms are in spirit similar to DIC algorithms\, DVC requires special attention and expertise from multiple fields (3D imaging\, in situ testing\, CT reconstruction\, mechanics of materials\, etc.) as the texture is not controlled (natural contrast brought by imaging) and the noise/CT artefacts are often dominating the accuracy/precision of the measurements. Adding the 4th dimension (3D + time) also means that data processing and visualization are key to extract the mechanical information hidden inside the 4D datasets. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works (1.5 day) using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific™ Amira-Avizo Software 3D where two solutions are implemented (a classic subset based approach and a more robust global approach). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.

SUMMARY:Training Course: Visualisation & Quantification of Tomographic Datasets
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering theory and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software. \nDate: Thursday 18 September – Friday 19 September 2025 \nTime: 09:00 – 17:00 \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nLab/synchrotron X-ray tomography has emerged as one of the most important techniques for research in a wide range of applications including healthcare\, energy\, food and geology. Advances in the quality of X-ray beams\, optics\, high speed data acquisition and in-situ environments have made significant improvements to non-destructive imaging of a specimen structure in 3D and over a wide range of length scales (micron-and nanoscales). Although the direct benefit of X-ray tomography is the 3D visualisation of the internal structure of specimens\, which is very valuable to understand the structure/function relationships\, the technique has however a lot more to offer. The information is hidden in the data and robust methods and workflows are needed to extract it in a relevant and accurate way\, and make it readily available for decision making. \nThis training course is organised by The University of Manchester at Harwell and 3Dmagination Ltd. It is aimed at researchers working in the field of mechanics\, physics\, chemistry\, biology and materials science using 3D imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography\, and who are interested to acquire solid methods for visualising and extracting relevant scientific information from 3D tomographic data. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D (1.5 day). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. The attendees are invited to bring their own laptop (an Avizo license will be provided for the training). \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.

Everyone has probably seen the new-age car bumper sticker “We are all made of Stardust” and it’s true that at some point in the past of cosmic history\, our atoms were forged in the hearts of stars. However\, that isn’t quite the origin story and this talk will take us on a journey from the earliest cosmic times to the present. \nEverything we see around us was originally created in its simplest form\, a Hydrogen atom\, in the creation event\, the Big Bang\, at the start of the Universe at the beginning of time. His PhD was in “Galaxy Evolution and Cosmology” with Prof. Michael Rowan-Robinson at Imperial College\, London\, and has worked on large galaxy surveys for both ground-based telescopes and space-borne missions. \nHe worked for 7 years in Japan on the AKARI space telescope before moving to the UK to RAL Space to work on the SPIRE instrument on the Herschel Space Observatory where he led the team that produced all the nice images from the mission. \nHe now works on the ARIEL mission searching for exoplanets and the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope\, the largest scientific facility ever to be built.

I like to think that I add a personal touch to each of the classes I teach. Hopefully anyone that participates in my classes feels they’ve worked hard\, learnt something new and laughed and enjoyed themselves. Exercise should be fun and challenging and that’s what I aim to bring to each session. \nEach session will include a few basic movements\, and some interchangeable exercises so that you will get a variety\, and a good base to build from each session.

DESCRIPTION:As part of our 80th anniversary celebrations\, we’re delighted to announce the Light Reel Film Festival\, featuring films inspired by the world-class science and technology on campus. \nEach film will feature an introduction from a leading scientist and be screened outside in The Quad\, complete with a covered tent\, giant screen\, and comfy seating. \nTo kick off\, we’ve got Oscar-winning epic Oppenheimer – Christopher Nolan’s gripping retelling of the man behind the atomic bomb. Harwell became the UK’s nuclear energy research campus and several scientists who had worked with Oppenheimer on the Manhatten project came to work here. \nFrom the outdoor cinema venue of The Quad\, you can see the imposing Hangar 10 building which housed the first large nuclear reactor to be built outside of the USA and USSR. It was called BEPO (which stood for British Experimental Pile Zero) and began operating in 1948. It was used for a range of research and produced radioactive isotopes for medical purposes. \nWe’re delighted to welcome Frank Close\, Science Communicator extraordinare\, to give the expert introduction prior to this screening. \nFood\, drinks and snacks are available on site.
