There are many risks\, such as choosing the wrong problem to work on\, applying a new technology inappropriately\, selecting the team unwisely\, or cutting corners for reasons of limited time or budget. \nWe will explore some of the challenges that start-up biotech companies face and highlight the behaviours that tend to increase the probability of success. We will also discuss how leaders sustain innovation after a first drug candidate – protecting the “research engine” event as clinical spending rises and investor attention narrows. \nThe throughline is resilient\, reality-based leadership: building strong teams\, communicating a clear vision without over-promising\, and staying effective – not just efficient – while turning scientific breakthroughs into medicines. \nBiography: \nMark Murcko has directly contributed to nine marketed drugs and several additional molecules currently in mid- to late-stage clinical trials. SUMMARY:Training Course: Advanced Scripting and Batching of Tomographic Datasets
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering Python scripting in Avizo (1 day) and development of Avizo Python module (1 day). \nDate: Monday 23 March – Tuesday 24 March 2026 \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nAlthough X-ray tomography is an attractive characterisation technique in materials science\, it generates a huge amount of data at a fast rate and it can be extremely time consuming to process the data manually. A great benefit to creating scripts and plugins in Avizo is the ability to reuse a workflow on more than one image or to develop a bespoke workflow for more complex materials. \nTake your skills to the next level and register for this course which focuses on how to develop Python scripts and plugins in Avizo. You will practise on real case studies and learn how to automate a workflow on multiple images\, transform Avizo objects into Numpy arrays (and vice versa)\, extend Avizo functionalities with powerful Python tools such as Simple ITK\, and develop your own plugin. \nThe training is organised in two parts: Pyhton scripting in Avizo (1 day) and development of Avizo Python module (1 day). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. The attendees are invited to bring their own laptop (an Avizo license will be provided for the training). \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. DESCRIPTION:Learn to identify the birds in your garden and local area in this course for adults. \n\n\n\n\nPerhaps you have problems telling your great tit from your coal tit? Maybe female chaffinches look a bit like sparrows? We will help you sort out species confusion and sharpen up your bird ID skills! You’ll be learning to identify your local birds by song as well as sight. \nThe day will start with a brief session indoors covering the basics\, then aim to spend most of the session out on the nature reserve. We will walk around the reserve\, visiting likely spots including our bird hide\, and honing your skills. SUMMARY:Inside Diamond – In Person Public Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Our Inside Diamond open day events offer the chance for members of the public to visit the facility and see inside our particle accelerator and experimental laboratories. You will also meet some of the scientists that use Diamond and can ask them about the work they do – everything from viral proteins to engine parts and ancient texts. \nDate: Saturday 21st March 2026 \nThere are several starting times for the visits which you can select during the booking process: typically 09:30\, 11:00\, 12:45 and 14:15. \n\nClick here for ballot entry\n\nBallot entry closes at midnight on Sunday 15th February 2026. You will be contacted within 1 week of the closing date. \nThese events are very popular and we can only accommodate a limited number of ‘in person’ visitors. To ensure a variety of visitors can join us\, we limit tickets to 6 people per ballot entry. \nA typical visit will take approximately 2.5 hours and will consist of: \n\nAn introductory talk giving a general overview of Diamond and what it is used for.\nA guided tour – including a trip to see inside the synchrotron and our laboratories (please note that extensive walking will be involved).\nAn opportunity to engage with demonstrations and activities run by Diamond staff\, users and partner institutions.\n\nAdvice / Restrictions: \n\nDue to the size of the facility\, there will be extensive walking involved during the guided tour and as such\, we advise all visitors to wear comfortable footwear.\nDue to the nature of the facility\, we do not admit visitors under the age of 6 and we recommend that the visit is more suitable for adults and children aged 11+. DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering theory and computer-based practical works using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D where two solutions are implemented. \nDate: Wednesday 25 February – Thursday 26 February 2026 \nTime: 09:00 – 17:00 \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nDigital Volume Correlation (DVC) is a powerful experimental technique that computes 3D full-field displacement and strain maps from volumes images acquired during a deformation process of a material. DVC is the 3D extension of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) which was first described four decades ago. The emergence of DVC started early 2000s with the use of X-ray CT combined with in situ rigs to capture 3D morphological changes with time. Although the DVC algorithms are in spirit similar to DIC algorithms\, DVC requires special attention and expertise from multiple fields (3D imaging\, in situ testing\, CT reconstruction\, mechanics of materials\, etc.) as the texture is not controlled (natural contrast brought by imaging) and the noise/CT artefacts are often dominating the accuracy/precision of the measurements. Adding the 4th dimension (3D + time) also means that data processing and visualization are key to extract the mechanical information hidden inside the 4D datasets. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works (1.5 day) using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific™ Amira-Avizo Software 3D where two solutions are implemented (a classic subset based approach and a more robust global approach). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.

DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering theory and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software. \nDate: Wednesday 4 February – Thursday 5 February 2026 \nTime: 09:00 – 17:00 \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nLab/synchrotron X-ray tomography has emerged as one of the most important techniques for research in a wide range of applications including healthcare\, energy\, food and geology. Advances in the quality of X-ray beams\, optics\, high speed data acquisition and in-situ environments have made significant improvements to non-destructive imaging of a specimen structure in 3D and over a wide range of length scales (micron-and nanoscales). Although the direct benefit of X-ray tomography is the 3D visualisation of the internal structure of specimens\, which is very valuable to understand the structure/function relationships\, the technique has however a lot more to offer. The information is hidden in the data and robust methods and workflows are needed to extract it in a relevant and accurate way\, and make it readily available for decision making. \nThis training course is organised by The University of Manchester at Harwell and 3Dmagination Ltd. It is aimed at researchers working in the field of mechanics\, physics\, chemistry\, biology and materials science using 3D imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography\, and who are interested to acquire solid methods for visualising and extracting relevant scientific information from 3D tomographic data. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D (1.5 day). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. The attendees are invited to bring their own laptop (an Avizo license will be provided for the training). \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.

DESCRIPTION:The Rosalind Franklin Institute is welcoming Dr Francesco Boccellato on Thursday 15th January from 10:30 – 11:30. \nTalk title: \nEpithelial barrier homeostasis and response to infections. \n\nBook your place here (online attendance only)\n\nAbstract: \nThe forefront of the gastrointestinal mucosa consists mainly of a continuous polarised epithelial monolayer\, protected by mucus. This strong defence barrier can be colonized by pathogens arousing a chronic inflammatory state. This exceptional colonization ability is associated with an increased risk of developing adenocarcinomas at the sites of infection. \nWe have regenerated organoids and we have developed a new functional epithelial monolayer culture called “mucosoids”. The mucosoids are human multi-lineage stem-cell based in-vitro equivalent of a real mucosa. They mimic the function of a homeostatic epithelial barrier including accumulation of mucus on the apical side. Use of human mucosoid cultures reveals novel insight into epithelial homeostasis and response to bacterial infections and irritants. \nBiography: \nDr. Francesco Boccellato studied at “Sapienza” University of Rome. Since he was a student\, he was interested in the impact of pathogens in causing cancer in humans. During his PhD in Tome he studied the tole of the Epstein Barr virus (EBV) in deregulating microRNAs in diffuse large B cell lymphomas. \nAfter his PhD\, Francesco moved to Berlin\, at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology\, where he started being interested in the causality of bacterial infection in human cancers. To study the impact of infection on healthy epithelial barriers\, Francesco invented a new cultivation system for healthy epithelial cells called the mucosoids. The mucosoids are monolayer of polarised epithelial cells that recapitulate all the functions of an epithelial barrier in the body\, including mucus production. \nIn 2019\, Francesco started his independent group in the University of Oxford (UK) at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research.
