SUMMARY:RI Lecture: Batteries for Emerging Economies
DESCRIPTION:Open to RI Members and non-members\, available in-person and via Livestream. \nBatteries for Emerging Economies: Discover how batteries will power our planet into the future. \nBetween 750-800 million people globally lack access to a reliable source of electricity. One possible solution to enhance the reliability of energy supply and maximise power availability from low-carbon\, renewable energy sources is the increased use of battery energy storage. \nIn the latest public engagement event in partnership with Faraday Institution\, we take a deep dive into the research\, systems engineering\, and logistical challenges (and their solutions) of accelerating the deployment of batteries in emerging economies for micro-mobility and static energy storage. \nDelivering this lecture are Professor Charlotte Watts (Chief Scientific Advisor at the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO))\, Professor Emma Kendrick (Professor of Energy Materials at the University of Birmingham)\, and Professor David Howey (Professor of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford). \nDoors to the theatre will open at 18:30 and the event will begin at 19:00. \nA Royal Institution and Faraday Institution collaboration.  \nClick here for further details and to book: Batteries for emerging economies | Royal Institution (rigb.org) \n

SUMMARY:Neurodiversity with James Cracknell
DESCRIPTION:James Cracknell\, OBE\, will be hosting a discussion about Neurodiversity on Wednesday 24th April at 12:30 in Launchpad\, Quad Two. \nFollowing a stellar career rowing for Great Britain – winning two Olympic gold medals in 2000 and 2004\, and six World Championships – he continues to challenge himself with endurance adventures\, despite a life-threatening bike accident in 2010. While cycling across America he was hit by a fuel truck travelling at 70 mph. He suffered a contrecoup injury to the frontal lobe of his brain. James was never going to quit so embarked on a long journey of recovery back to full health. \nJames decided on a career change to help champion wellbeing in the workplace and now consults at Curve Workplaces as their Sustainability & Wellbeing Ambassador\, he works with his colleagues and their clients to advise on occupational health issues that can promote and maintain the health and wellbeing of employees. \nIt is a wonderful opportunity to hear James talk about Triumph over Adversity\, understanding the power of resilience and reinvention. \nBook your place here: memberofthefuture.app.link/8hFPpVVsIHb

SUMMARY:CSED Hackathon 2024
DESCRIPTION:The UCL CSED (Centre for Space\, Exochemistry Data)\, co-hosted with STFC DiRAC and UCL Data Intensive Science & Industry (DISI)\, is organising an in-person CSED hackathon that invites participants to work as a team and extract vital signals of exoplanets from simulated observations provided by mission experts involved in the ESA Ariel mission. Your innovative ideas will help towards our on going efforts to understand the nature of extrasolar planets and the conditions for life to emerge. \nIn addition to working on a challenging problem in a fun and dynamic environment (lunch and snacks are provided)\, we have also invited Professor Ofer Lahav (Vice-Dean (International) of UCL Faculty of Mathematical & Physical Sciences) and Luís Simões (Lead Data Scientist and co-founder at ML Analytics) to share their experiences in applying machine learning in Space Science from both academic and industrial perspectives. \nParticipation is free and open to individuals from various educational backgrounds and professions\, including students\, PhDs\, researchers\, and working professionals across all disciplines and universities\, so whether you are data scientists\, machine learning gurus\, astronomers\, passionate astronomy students or just machine learning amateurs\, you are more than welcome to join us! Our experience tells us that a great solution is more likely to present itself with a good mixture of expertise\, so don’t feel pressured to possess all the knowledge beforehand! \nJoin either as an individual or a pre-formed team (5 people max). You will be allocated into a team of 4 – 5 people on the day. Places are limited so secure your spot asap if interested. \nVisit the event website to learn more\, view the day’s agenda\, and book your space.
