SUMMARY:RAL Lecture: 70 Years of Particle Accelerators on the Harwell Campus
DESCRIPTION:Come along to R22 Pickavance Lecture Theatre or join online to hear from Alan Letchford\, STFC RAL (ISIS)\, on the subject of particle accelerators. \nThe design and operation of particle accelerators has been an important part of the work carried out on the Harwell site since its earliest days in the 1940s. Since those early days\, the technology has matured so that globally today\, there are approximately 30\,000 particle accelerators ranging from small machines used for industrial and medical applications\, through to massive machines covering many square kilometres used in fundamental research. \nThis talk will give a brief introduction to what particle accelerators are and how they work before telling the story of the Proton Linear Accelerator project of the 1950s and how it has a surprising connection to the cutting-edge research carried out at Harwell today. \nIf you are interested in attending either online or in person\, please get in touch below to express your interest. \n\nGet in touch here to attend

SUMMARY:Dark Matter Day: Happy Halloween
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this interactive online visit to Boulby Underground Laboratory to celebrate Halloween and Dark Matter Day. \nWhen we look around our world and out into space\, there is an enormous variety – trees\, birds\, planets\, and stars; however\, everything that we can see and touch (“visible matter”)\, accounts for only 5% of the Universe. At the Boulby Underground Laboratory\, we’re working on the search for the rest – the missing ‘dark’ matter. \nAt this family-friendly event we’ll be going live to the Boulby Underground Laboratory\, 1100 metres deep underground to meet the team to find out how they use their imagination to help to search for something we can’t see. We’ll be doing a fun Halloween activity\, making our own dark matter masks\, that you can join in with at home. \n\nBook your place here\n\nThis event will take place online\, via Zoom webinar\, and will involve a hands-on activity for you to do at home using recycled materials. Details of what you’ll need will be in your confirmation email. \nIf you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to contact the team.

SUMMARY:In situ experiments and Digital Volume Correlation Training Course
DESCRIPTION:Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) is a powerful experimental technique that computes 3D full-field displacement and strain maps from volumes images acquired during a deformation process of a material. DVC is the 3D extension of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) which was first described four decades ago. \nThe emergence of DVC started early 2000s with the use of X-ray CT combined with in situ rigs to capture 3D morphological changes with time. Although the DVC algorithms are in spirit similar to DIC algorithms\, DVC requires special attention and expertise from multiple fields (3D imaging\, in situ testing\, CT reconstruction\, mechanics of materials\, etc.) as the texture is not controlled (natural contrast brought by imaging) and the noise/CT artefacts are often dominating the accuracy/precision of the measurements. Adding the 4th dimension (3D + time) also means that data processing and visualization are key to extract the mechanical information hidden inside the 4D datasets. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works (1.5 day) using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D where two solutions are implemented (a classic subset based approach and a more robust global approach). \nAt the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nWho should attend? Researchers working in the field of mechanics\, physics\, and materials science using 3D imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography who are interested to (i) compute 3D full-field displacements and strains for linking the microstructure to the mechanical/physical behaviour\, (ii) use the DVC measured data to feed/validate finite element models. The attendees are requested to bring their own laptop to practise on the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension (free trial licence will be provided).

SUMMARY:Public Speaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Polly Tisdall as we unravel the art of presenting and storytelling to help you gain confidence\, inspire your audience. \nFocusing on effective storytelling for public speaking\, these 2 sessions will provide you with a portfolio of exercises\, approaches and techniques to enable you to better present your work to diverse audiences. \nSession one on 11 October (4 hours) will focus on identifying and developing your natural tools for effective communication (voice\, body language and gesture) before introducing dramatic story structure and considering how you might apply this to your work and life. \nSession two on 18 October (4 hours) consolidating and embedding what’s learnt. Polly will help you develop your structure and delivery – working with character\, conflict\, contrast and emotional impact. You will have the chance to practise presenting in front of a small group\, to play with your ideas and to receive constructive feedback to further refine your story. \nWhether you have explored storytelling before\, are an experienced public speaker or a complete beginner\, this session is designed to create a safe space for testing ideas and exploring how your work can become a compelling and memorable narrative. \nPlease feel free to bring a piece of work you have either previously presented or would like to present in future. SUMMARY:Visualisation & Quantification of Tomographic Datasets Training Course
DESCRIPTION:A 2 day training course covering theory and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software. \nVenue: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitors Centre at RAL\, on the Harwell Campus\, Oxfordshire.\nCOST £400 + VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs & government\, £800 + VAT for industry. \nLab/synchrotron X-ray tomography has emerged as one of the most important techniques for research in a wide range of applications including healthcare\, energy\, food and geology. Advances in the quality of X-ray beams\, optics\, high speed data acquisition and in-situ environments have made significant improvements to non-destructive imaging of a specimen structure in 3D and over a wide range of length scales (micron-and nanoscales). Although the direct benefit of X-ray tomography is the 3D visualisation of the internal structure of specimens\, which is very valuable to understand the structure/function relationships\, the technique has however a lot more to offer. The information is hidden in the data and robust methods and workflows are needed to extract it in a relevant and accurate way\, and make it readily available for decision making. \nThis training course is organised by The University of Manchester at Harwell and 3Dmagination Ltd. It is aimed at researchers working in the field of mechanics\, physics\, chemistry\, biology and materials science using 3D imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography\, and who are interested to acquire solid methods for visualising and extracting relevant scientific information from 3D tomographic data. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D (1.5 day). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. The attendees are invited to bring their own laptop (an Avizo license will be provided for the training). \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.

SUMMARY:Seminars at the Franklin: Professor Steve Meech
DESCRIPTION:Title: \nThe Diverse Photophysics of Fluorescent Proteins \nAbstract: \nFluorescent proteins (FPs) have been a revolutionary force in bioimaging. The discovery of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) dramatically enhanced our ability to image specific proteins in living systems in real time. GFP was quickly shown to have an array of stable mutants yielding emission tuneable across the visible spectrum\, allowing the study of protein-protein interactions for example. The FPs were variously shown to undergo excited state proton transfer\, excited state isomerization and permanent photochromic reactions. The latter two led to the practical application of super resolution bioimaging and the development of optical highlighter imaging respectively. All of these properties ultimately derive from the extraordinary diverse photophysics of the chromophore of GFP\, HBDI. \nIn this presentation\, the photophysics of HBDI will be reviewed\, along with some of the methods of ultrafast spectroscopy employed in its study. We then describe how the protein matrix controls HBDI photophysics\, leading to the diversity in FP behaviour. These measurements not only allow better understanding of – and control over – FP behaviour but also affords the opportunity to investigate protein structural relaxation dynamics away from equilibrium. \n\nBook your place here\n\n  \nBiography: \nProf. Steve Meech is a Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of East Anglia. His research is focused on understanding ultrafast dynamics of complex condensed phase systems including liquid state dynamics\, fast photochemical reactions and photoactive proteins. He maintains a number of national and international research collaborations which facilitates the application of ultrafast methods to some of the most interesting and challenging problems.

SUMMARY:UK HSA Lecture: Dr Zelikoff
DESCRIPTION:Health impacts of early life exposure to electronic cigarettes: a toxicological perspective on the offspring \nJoin us online on Friday 26th July between 11:00-12:30 for a talk by Dr Zelikoff on the health impacts of early life \nDr Zelikoff is a tenure-professor in the Division of Environmental Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine\, in New York City. She has >30 years of experience assessing the toxicology of inhaled single contaminants and complex mixtures\, including metals\, nanoparticles\, gaseous and particulate (PM) air pollutants\, and smokeless and combustible products from cigarettes\, biomass burning\, and diesel exhaust. She is a pioneering figure in identifying neurological changes following early life exposure demonstrating the risks associated with maternal “vaping”. \nFor more than a decade\, studies in her laboratory have focused on the effects of early life exposure (prenatal\, neonatal and adolescent exposures) to tobacco/nicotine products\, including e-cigarettes\, smokeless tobacco and conventional cigarettes and particulate air pollution on fetal growth and development\, neurobiology and gene expression changes\, neuroinflammation and later life adverse offspring outcomes including effects on cognitive behaviour and neuro-inflammation\, pulmonary and cardiovascular disease\, obesity\, immune dysfunction and reproductive success in males and female juvenile and adult offspring. \nFor example\, early life mouse studies carried out in her laboratory demonstrated that adult female offspring of mothers exposed during pregnancy to e-cig aerosols 9with and without nicotine) have increased pulmonary protein levels of fibronectin\, LEF-1 and E-cadherin\, while age-matched male offspring had decreased E-cadherin\, but increased PPARg protein levels. These studies in mice suggest that vaping during pregnancy increases the propensity for later life disease and pulmonary modifications in a sex-dependent manner. Her major contributions and pioneering findings to the field of toxicology and environmental health are associated with the public health implications associated with early life exposure to tobacco/nicotine “smoking” and smokeless products in animal models. \n\nClick here to register your attendance

SUMMARY:RAL Lecture: A Personal View of the Higgs Boson
DESCRIPTION:Come along to R22 Pickavance Lecture Theatre or join online to hear from Professor Bill Murray\, RAL PPD/Warwick\, on the subject of the Higgs Boson particle. \nPeter Higgs’ conjecture of a radically different fundamental particle led to a fifty-year search which in 2012 resulted in the discovery of a new particle – one which has so far matched precisely the predictions from 1964. What have we learnt about the properties of this new particle and why are particles physicists agreed that detailed studies are the highest priority for the next decades? What does it teach us about the role of mathematics in the Universe? \nProf. Bill Murray will review how the discovery was achieved\, and what we can expect to learn about the Higgs boson from the coming years of the LHC. He is a member of the ATLAS collaboration who was closely involved in the first observation\, and today is searching for additional Higgs bosons with other masses and couplings. \nIf you are interested in attending either online or in person\, please get in touch below to express your interest. \n\nGet in touch here to attend

SUMMARY:Seminars at the Franklin: Arjun Narayanan
\n\nBook your place here\n\n  \nBiography: \nArjun Narayanan is a condensed matter physicist specialising in the physical chemistry of living matter. His academic journey included work in nanoelectronics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (M.Sc.) and solid-state physics at New York University (PhD) and Oxford University\, where he contributed to the understanding of quasi 1-D organic superconductors and topological insulators. More recently\, he has applied condensed matter physics concepts to study the unconventional physical chemistry of living cells and tissues\, enhancing our understanding of cell biology aspects such as protein quality control and cytoskeletal self-organization. Following positions at Oxford University and MIT\, he served as the ELBE Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Germany. Currently\, Arjun seeks to advance our knowledge of cell biology and non-equilibrium physics through the exploration of non-equilibrium self-organization in biological systems.
