SUMMARY:John D Lawson Lecture and Reception – Prof. Stephen J. Blundell
DESCRIPTION:To boldly go: exploring the quantum materials universe with neutrons and muons \nCome along to R22 Pickavance Lecture Theatre or join online to hear from Prof. Stephen J. Blundell\, University of Oxford\, on the subject of the quantum materials universe. \nThe properties of the universe seem to be determined by a fixed set of fundamental constants. We cannot rerun the history of the universe with different sets of constants to see what would happen. But what if we could? Using the new science of quantum materials\, each crystal of a new substance hives us a new universe with a new set of constants\, laws\, and emergent particles. \nIn this lecture\, I will describe how neutrons and muons give us a window of these new universes\, allow us to see how quantum effects can be revealed through studying the microworld\, and how the technologies developed through these new avenues of research might impact everyone. \nIf you are interested in attending either online or in person\, please get in touch below to express your interest. \n\nGet in touch here to attend\n\nThis year\, the RAL Lawson Lecture is being included in the schedule of the ISIS 40th Anniversary. \nThis lecture is followed by a reception at 17:00 in the R22 Coffee Lounge and marquee – All welcome.

SUMMARY:AI Networking Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an AI and Machine Learning networking breakfast\, hosted by members of the scientific community from across the campus. \nSince the general release of ChatGPT in November 2022\, interest in AI and ML technologies has skyrocketed\, shifting these algorithms from research activities into the public domain. While these technologies have been around for years\, this moment highlighted the cutting-edge possibilities and the vast potential for where they could go. Two years on\, progress in AI and ML continues to accelerate\, with new use cases emerging daily. \nHarwell Campus is a unique environment where science and technology converge. Groups like the Scientific Computing Division (SCD) regularly collaborate with the UK’s central facilities\, including the Central Laser Facility\, Diamond Light Source\, and ISIS Neutron and Muon Source. This integration has spurred the development of many AI and ML tools specifically for the scientific community. \nAs more companies are drawn to the campus\, beyond the core UK government-funded projects\, it’s the perfect time to come together to discuss the tools and technologies being developed\, explore potential collaborations\, and chart the future direction at the intersection of science and technology. \nWe invite you to join us to learn more about ongoing projects\, share your experiences\, and connect with like-minded colleagues. \nImage created by DALL-E 3 (ChatGPT) \n\nBook on the app

SUMMARY:RAL Lecture: Prof. Tony Freeth
DESCRIPTION:The Antikythera Mechanism: Nearly Impossible? \nCome along to R22 Pickavance Lecture Theatre or join online to hear from Prof. Tony Freeth\, University College London\, on the subject of the Antikythera Mechanism. \nIn 1901\, Greek sponge divers recovered a corroded lump from an ancient shipwreck near the tiny island of Antikythera\, between Crete and mainland Greece. Subsequently\, it split apart and revealed tiny precision gearwheels – a shocking discovery for ancient Greece. \nMore than a century later\, we know that the Antikythera Mechanisms was a highly sophisticated astronomical calculating machine\, constructed from bronze gearwheels. We also know that it originally included three gears with 53 teeth! How is that possible? \nThe latest model shows indications for the Sun\, Moon and planets as well as eclipse prediction. How confident can we be in this reconstruction? How much is certain? How much is conjectural? \nWhat is the history of research that has led to these conclusions? What are the implications of this technological revolution? \nIf you are interested in attending either online or in person\, please get in touch below to express your interest. \n\nGet in touch here to attend

SUMMARY:Advanced Scripting and Batching of Tomographic Datasets Training Course
DESCRIPTION:Although X-ray tomography is an attractive characterisation technique in materials science\, it generates a huge amount of data at a fast rate and it can be extremely time consuming to process the data manually. A great benefit to creating scripts and plugins in Avizo is the ability to reuse a workflow on more than one image or to develop a bespoke workflow for more complex materials. \nThe training is organised in two parts: Python scripting in Avizo (1 day) and development of Avizo Python module (1 day).  At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. \nThis course is aimed at advanced users with prior expertise in 3D imaging and image processing of 3D datasets. Prior experience with Avizo and/or Python is recommended. \n  \n\nSecure your place here\n\n  \nPlace are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice. \nCost: £400 + VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs & government\, £800 + VAT for Industry attendees.

SUMMARY:Remembrance Day Parade & Service
DESCRIPTION:Remembrance Day \n‘Remembrance Sunday is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life’. \nRemembrance Day\, sometimes known as Poppy day\, is a memorial day observed since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. \nRemembrance Day is observed on 11th November to recall the end of First World War hostilities. Hostilities ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” of 1918\, in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning. (“At the 11th hour” refers to the passing of the 11th hour\, or 11:00 am.) The First World War formally ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on 28 June 1919. \nRemembrance Day in Didcot \nDidcot Remembrance Day Parade and Service is held on the second Sunday of November each year. \nThe parade starts from Edinburgh Drive at approximately 240pm and the service is held on Smallbone Recreation Ground at the War Memorial at approximately 3pm. \nRefreshments are held at Didcot Civic Hall after the service\, and we are happy to announce that this year Abingdon and Didcot Military Wives Choir will be performing after the service in the Main Hall of Didcot Civic Hall. \nEveryone is welcome to watch the parade and service. If you are part of a local club or organisation and would like to take part in the parade and/or wreath laying\, please contact events@didcot.gov.uk \nDidcot Town Council work together with The Royal British Legion and 11 EOD Vauxhall Barracks to organise the Remembrance day Parade and Service. \nRoad and Carpark Closure: \nDidcot Civic Hall carpark will be closed from the evening of Saturday 9th November to 8am Monday 11th November \nBroadway from Vicarage Road to Ernest Road will be closed on Sunday 10th November from 2.15pm to 3pm \nBritwell Road will be closed on Sunday 10th November from 2.15pm to 3.30pm

SUMMARY:Seminars at the Franklin: Prof. Rainer Kaufmann
DESCRIPTION:The Rosalind Franklin Institute is welcoming Prof. Rainer Kaufmann on Thursday 7 November from 10:30. \nTo watch the seminar online\, please sign up via the link below. \nRAL site pass holders are welcome to attend in person in the Franklin’s first floor Hub. To join in person\, please arrive in the R113 Franklin foyer at least 5 minutes before the start of the seminar and a member of the team will let you into the building. \n\nRSVP here\n\nTitle: \nDevelopment of a novel setup for cryo super-resolution fluorescence microscopy in the context of cryo-ET \nAbstract: \nSuper-resolution methods present a true fame changer for the field of correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM). They allow bridging the big resolution gap between conventional fluorescence microscopy (FM) and electron microscopy (EM). However\, super-resolution FM under cryo-conditions for correlation with cryo electron tomography (cryo-ET) is still at an early and experimental stage. To achieve the aim of using cryo-FM to localise and identify individual proteins in cryo-ET\, the development of cryo-ET-compatible super-resolution cryo-FM is essential. \nIn my talk\, I will focus on how cryo single molecule photo-physics determines super-resolution cryo-FM\, and why novel concepts regarding the design of super-resolution cryo-FM setups play an important role\, not only for imaging\, but also to gain a better understanding of the altered photo-physics under cryo-conditions. \n\nBook your place here\n\nBiography: \nRainer Kaufmann gained his PhD in Physics from the University of Heidelberg developing single molecule based super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. Afterwards he spent 6 years as a postdoc at the University of Oxford\, with a focus on combining super-resolution fluorescence microscopy with electron microscopy. He is one of the pioneers in the field of cryo super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. \nSince 2017\, he is a PI at the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) in Hamburg and the Department of Physics at the University of Hamburg.

SUMMARY:RAL Lecture: 70 Years of Particle Accelerators on the Harwell Campus
DESCRIPTION:Come along to R22 Pickavance Lecture Theatre or join online to hear from Alan Letchford\, STFC RAL (ISIS)\, on the subject of particle accelerators. \nThe design and operation of particle accelerators has been an important part of the work carried out on the Harwell site since its earliest days in the 1940s. Since those early days\, the technology has matured so that globally today\, there are approximately 30\,000 particle accelerators ranging from small machines used for industrial and medical applications\, through to massive machines covering many square kilometres used in fundamental research. \nThis talk will give a brief introduction to what particle accelerators are and how they work before telling the story of the Proton Linear Accelerator project of the 1950s and how it has a surprising connection to the cutting-edge research carried out at Harwell today. \nIf you are interested in attending either online or in person\, please get in touch below to express your interest. \n\nGet in touch here to attend

SUMMARY:Dark Matter Day: Happy Halloween
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this interactive online visit to Boulby Underground Laboratory to celebrate Halloween and Dark Matter Day. \nWhen we look around our world and out into space\, there is an enormous variety – trees\, birds\, planets\, and stars; however\, everything that we can see and touch (“visible matter”)\, accounts for only 5% of the Universe. At the Boulby Underground Laboratory\, we’re working on the search for the rest – the missing ‘dark’ matter. \nAt this family-friendly event we’ll be going live to the Boulby Underground Laboratory\, 1100 metres deep underground to meet the team to find out how they use their imagination to help to search for something we can’t see. We’ll be doing a fun Halloween activity\, making our own dark matter masks\, that you can join in with at home. \n\nBook your place here\n\nThis event will take place online\, via Zoom webinar\, and will involve a hands-on activity for you to do at home using recycled materials. Details of what you’ll need will be in your confirmation email. \nIf you have any questions\, please don’t hesitate to contact the team.
