SUMMARY:Training Course: Advanced Scripting and Batching of Tomographic Datasets
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering Python scripting in Avizo (1 day) and development of Avizo Python module (1 day). \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nAlthough X-ray tomography is an attractive characterisation technique in materials science\, it generates a huge amount of data at a fast rate and it can be extremely time consuming to process the data manually. A great benefit to creating scripts and plugins in Avizo is the ability to reuse a workflow on more than one image or to develop a bespoke workflow for more complex materials. \nTake your skills to the next level and register for this course which focuses on how to develop Python scripts and plugins in Avizo. You will practise on real case studies and learn how to automate a workflow on multiple images\, transform Avizo objects into Numpy arrays (and vice versa)\, extend Avizo functionalities with powerful Python tools such as Simple ITK\, and develop your own plugin. \nThe training is organised in two parts: Pyhton scripting in Avizo (1 day) and development of Avizo Python module (1 day). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. The attendees are invited to bring their own laptop (an Avizo license will be provided for the training). \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.

SUMMARY:Harwell Connect @ Mary Lyon Centre\, MRC Harwell
DESCRIPTION:We’re pleased to announce the next Harwell Connect host – the Mary Lyon Centre at Medical Research Council (MRC) Harwell. \nDate: Tuesday 4th March 2025 \nTime: 11:00 – 13:00 \nVenue: Advance Training Centre \nCome along to this event to meet members of the team\, find out how they work\, and take a short tour of the facility. \nFurther agenda details will be made available closer to the time. For restrictions and entry procedures relating to a tour of the facility\, please click here. \nIf you wish to attend\, please register on the campus app via the button below\, stating your interest in a joining a tour. \n\nRSVP your attendance here\n\nThe Mary Lyon Centre (MLC) at MRC Harwell is the UK’s national facility for mouse genetics and the use of mouse models for the preclinical study of human disease\, and the site of the UK National Mouse Archive. \nMost human diseases have a significant genetic component. Many variants in our DNA predispose us to disease\, yet our knowledge of these changes in our DNA\, and how they cause disease\, is limited. Studying genes in mice can reveal important insights into the functions of genes in humans since mouse models of disease can be remarkably similar to their human equivalent\, helping us to investigate how a disease develops and how we may be able to treat or prevent it. \nThe MLC offers a wide range of services to researchers\, including free archiving of mouse lines\, distribution of mouse lines from the Archive\, breeding and phenotyping of genetically altered mice\, and genome engineering services to generate new mouse models. \nMRC Harwell is also home to the Advance Training Centre which delivers our world-class practical and theoretical training courses and has labs and training rooms available to hire. \n\nRSVP your attendance here\n\nIf you experience problems registering on the app\, please contact the team here for assistance.

SUMMARY:Embracing Neurodiversity: The Power of Neuro-Inclusive Workplaces
DESCRIPTION:In today’s rapidly changing workplace\, embracing neurodiversity is more than an ethical choice— it’s a strategic advantage. \nThis workshop will explore neurodiversity as the natural variation in how human brains function and delve into conditions like autism\, ADHD\, and dyslexia\, which contribute unique strengths and skills to any organization. \nParticipants will discover how tapping into diverse perspectives\, thinking styles\, and problem-solving approaches can drive innovation\, enhance creativity\, and boost overall productivity. To cultivate a truly inclusive and dynamic work environment\, organizations must move beyond good intentions to implement tangible strategies. \nThis includes creating reasonable accommodations such as flexible work schedules\, sensory-friendly spaces\, and clear communication practices. These measures are essential for supporting neurodivergent employees and fostering a workplace culture where everyone can thrive. Through neurodiversity training and awareness\, organizations can adopt neuro-affirming practices that break down stereotypes and reduce stigma. \nThese initiatives empower neurodivergent individuals to contribute their full potential without fear of judgment or discrimination\, enriching the workplace with unique insights and bolstering team success. \n**IMPORTANT** Transport Links \nBus: The Nuffield Orthopaedics and Wood Farm Primary School bus stops are 5-10 minutes walk from the centre\, services bus routes 900\, 700 and 10 \nBicycle: Showers and bicycle storage available \nParking: There is no parking available on site \nPlease contact Kester Matthew if you have any further queries via email: kester.matthew2@barclays.com \n  \nEmbracing Neurodiversity: The Power of Neuro-Inclusive Workplaces Tickets\, Wed\, Feb 26\, 2025 at 11:00 AM | Eventbrite \n

SUMMARY:RAL Talking Science: Ariel and Alien Worlds – Dr Chris Pearson
DESCRIPTION:ARIEL and ALIEN Worlds: Enabling planetary science across light-years \nJoin us this February half-term for a fascinating\, family-friendly and FREE scientific talk by Dr Chris Pearson\, followed by fun hands-on space activities. \nDate: Friday 21 February 2025 \nTime: Talk at 13:30\, Activities until 16:00 \nLess than 35 years ago\, the only planets known to exist were those found within our own Solar System. From the first confirmed discovery in 1992 of a pair of exotic planets orbiting around a dead star\, the field of exoplanetary science (an exoplanet is a planet orbiting around another star) has undergone nothing short of a revolution. \nCurrently we stand at a staggering 6\,000 confirmed discoveries of planets outside our Solar System. We are at the dawn of a new age in exoplanet research with the Ariel mission due for launch in 2029\, becoming the leading space mission unveiling what the atmospheres of these exoplanets are made of. \nFollowing Dr Pearson’s fantastic talk\, we’ll move over to the RAL Visitor Centre for a whole range of hands-on activities – from making your own comet to handling real meteorites! \n\nMore information and booking\n\nTickets will be released at 19:30 on Friday 10 January. \nTickets for in-person events close the night before the event. If you would like to book an in-person last-minute place\, please email us at visitral@stfc.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Training Course: In-Situ Experiments & Digital Volume Correlation
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering theory and computer-based practical works using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D where two solutions are implemented. \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nDigital Volume Correlation (DVC) is a powerful experimental technique that computes 3D full-field displacement and strain maps from volumes images acquired during a deformation process of a material. DVC is the 3D extension of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) which was first described four decades ago. The emergence of DVC started early 2000s with the use of X-ray CT combined with in situ rigs to capture 3D morphological changes with time. Although the DVC algorithms are in spirit similar to DIC algorithms\, DVC requires special attention and expertise from multiple fields (3D imaging\, in situ testing\, CT reconstruction\, mechanics of materials\, etc.) as the texture is not controlled (natural contrast brought by imaging) and the noise/CT artefacts are often dominating the accuracy/precision of the measurements. Adding the 4th dimension (3D + time) also means that data processing and visualization are key to extract the mechanical information hidden inside the 4D datasets. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works (1.5 day) using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific™ Amira-Avizo Software 3D where two solutions are implemented (a classic subset based approach and a more robust global approach). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.

SUMMARY:Training Course: Visualisation & Quantification of Tomographic Datasets
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering theory and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software. \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nLab/synchrotron X-ray tomography has emerged as one of the most important techniques for research in a wide range of applications including healthcare\, energy\, food and geology. Advances in the quality of X-ray beams\, optics\, high speed data acquisition and in-situ environments have made significant improvements to non-destructive imaging of a specimen structure in 3D and over a wide range of length scales (micron-and nanoscales). Although the direct benefit of X-ray tomography is the 3D visualisation of the internal structure of specimens\, which is very valuable to understand the structure/function relationships\, the technique has however a lot more to offer. The information is hidden in the data and robust methods and workflows are needed to extract it in a relevant and accurate way\, and make it readily available for decision making. \nThis training course is organised by The University of Manchester at Harwell and 3Dmagination Ltd. It is aimed at researchers working in the field of mechanics\, physics\, chemistry\, biology and materials science using 3D imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography\, and who are interested to acquire solid methods for visualising and extracting relevant scientific information from 3D tomographic data. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D (1.5 day).
