SUMMARY:Property Owner & Tenant Net Zero Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Zero Carbon Oxfordshire Partnership is joining forces with Better Buildings Partnership to host a workshop designed to help projects reach their Net Zero goals. \nDate: Wednesday 14 May \nTime: 09:30 – 13:00 \nVenue: Satellite Applications Catapult\, Harwell Campus \n\nRegister your interest\n\nOxfordshire has over 15 million sq.m of industrial and commercial buildings. \nMany of these properties are rented\, which creates additional challenges in making progress towards net zero buildings. While both landlords and tenants often share similar net zero ambitions\, the split incentive remains a major barrier: building owners covering the costs of energy efficiency upgrades\, while tenants benefit from lower energy bills. On top of this\, institutional\, technical\, and legal barriers often slow down or block progress altogether. \nThe agenda includes: \n\nBetter Buildings Partnership\, sharing their Green Lease Toolkit\, practical resource designed to help address common obstacles to upgrading rented commercial properties.\nCase studies from owners and tenants\nInsights into market trends\, incentives and drivers for taking action\nNetworking and knowledge exchange opportunities\n\nThis free event is open to Oxfordshire organisations who: \n\nOwn or manage commercial property\nAre leasing commercial or industrial space\n\nSpaces are limited – click the button to register your interest in attending this event. \n\nRegister your interest

SUMMARY:Launch break! Watch the groundbreaking Biomass launch live at ESA
DESCRIPTION:Take a break and come and watch the Biomass live launch in the convivial atmosphere of the ECSAT Conference Centre with a coffee and croissant in your hand. \nAt 10:15 am (TBC) on Tuesday 29 April\, ESA’s groundbreaking Biomass satellite will lift off on a Vega-C rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. \nThe launch will be screened live in the main conference room with refreshments and mingling opportunities post-launch – the launch time/window being about 45 minutes. \nESA’s Biomass forest mission uses novel space technology to deliver new information about the state of our forests and how they are changing. Importantly\, the Biomass mission will further our knowledge of the role forests play in the carbon cycle\, and hence in the climate system. \nThe Biomass satellite is designed and built by a consortium of more than 50 companies under Airbus UK as the prime contractor. \nBiomass is also the first satellite to carry a radar instrument capable of penetrating the forest canopy to measure the biomass and height of forests consistently across the globe – and across different forest types. \n\nRegister your attendance on the campus app\n\nPlaces are limited and available on a first come\, first serve basis. Open to campus members only. Arrival from 10:00. \nIf you book a space and can no longer attend\, please cancel on the app or contact the team here to allow others to take your place. \nFind out more about Biomass here.

SUMMARY:Harwell Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Nominee for Readers’ Favourite Nonfiction (2023) in the Goodreads Choice Awards\, Doppelganger by Naomi Klein is the next book selected by the Book Club. \nWhat if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self – a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but\, in a twisted\, upside-down way\, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against? \nNot long ago\, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience – she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who. \nCombining comic memoir with chilling reportage and cobweb-clearing analysis\, Klein seeks to smash that mirror and chart a path beyond despair. \n\nWhat do we neglect as we polish and perfect our digital reflections?\nIs it possible to dispose of our doubles and overcome the pathologies of a culture of multiplication?\nCan we create a politics of collective care and undertake a true reckoning with historical crimes?\n\nThe result is a revelatory treatment of the way many of us think and feel now – and an intellectual adventure story for our times. \nIn collaboration with Be Free Young Carers\, we’ll be discussing Doppelganger on Tuesday 8th April at 12:15 in Quad Two. \n\nRSVP here\n\nHow It Works \nSign Up: Register to join the book club by Thursday 27th March (you may register after this date but we can’t guarantee a book). \nCollect Your Book: We’ll provide the book. Simply pick it up from Quad Two from Monday 17th March. \nRead & Discuss: You’ll have just shy of two weeks to read the book before we meet for our discussion over lunch in Quad Two on Tuesday 1st April. We’ll provide pizza\, or feel free to bring your own lunch. Each session will last for 45 minutes. \nAbout Be Free Young Carers: \nBased on campus\, Be Free Young Carers is the only charity in Oxfordshire dedicated to supporting children aged 8–17 with caregiving responsibilities for a family member. SUMMARY:Training Course: Advanced Scripting and Batching of Tomographic Datasets
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering Python scripting in Avizo (1 day) and development of Avizo Python module (1 day). \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nAlthough X-ray tomography is an attractive characterisation technique in materials science\, it generates a huge amount of data at a fast rate and it can be extremely time consuming to process the data manually. A great benefit to creating scripts and plugins in Avizo is the ability to reuse a workflow on more than one image or to develop a bespoke workflow for more complex materials. \nTake your skills to the next level and register for this course which focuses on how to develop Python scripts and plugins in Avizo. You will practise on real case studies and learn how to automate a workflow on multiple images\, transform Avizo objects into Numpy arrays (and vice versa)\, extend Avizo functionalities with powerful Python tools such as Simple ITK\, and develop your own plugin. \nThe training is organised in two parts: Pyhton scripting in Avizo (1 day) and development of Avizo Python module (1 day). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. The attendees are invited to bring their own laptop (an Avizo license will be provided for the training). \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.

SUMMARY:Harwell Connect @ Mary Lyon Centre\, MRC Harwell
DESCRIPTION:We’re pleased to announce the next Harwell Connect host – the Mary Lyon Centre at Medical Research Council (MRC) Harwell. \nDate: Tuesday 4th March 2025 \nTime: 11:00 – 13:00 \nVenue: Advance Training Centre \nCome along to this event to meet members of the team\, find out how they work\, and take a short tour of the facility. \nFurther agenda details will be made available closer to the time. For restrictions and entry procedures relating to a tour of the facility\, please click here. \nIf you wish to attend\, please register on the campus app via the button below\, stating your interest in a joining a tour. \n\nRSVP your attendance here\n\nThe Mary Lyon Centre (MLC) at MRC Harwell is the UK’s national facility for mouse genetics and the use of mouse models for the preclinical study of human disease\, and the site of the UK National Mouse Archive. \nMost human diseases have a significant genetic component. Many variants in our DNA predispose us to disease\, yet our knowledge of these changes in our DNA\, and how they cause disease\, is limited. Studying genes in mice can reveal important insights into the functions of genes in humans since mouse models of disease can be remarkably similar to their human equivalent\, helping us to investigate how a disease develops and how we may be able to treat or prevent it. \nThe MLC offers a wide range of services to researchers\, including free archiving of mouse lines\, distribution of mouse lines from the Archive\, breeding and phenotyping of genetically altered mice\, and genome engineering services to generate new mouse models. \nMRC Harwell is also home to the Advance Training Centre which delivers our world-class practical and theoretical training courses and has labs and training rooms available to hire. \n\nRSVP your attendance here\n\nIf you experience problems registering on the app\, please contact the team here for assistance.

SUMMARY:RAL Talking Science: Ariel and Alien Worlds – Dr Chris Pearson
DESCRIPTION:ARIEL and ALIEN Worlds: Enabling planetary science across light-years \nJoin us this February half-term for a fascinating\, family-friendly and FREE scientific talk by Dr Chris Pearson\, followed by fun hands-on space activities. \nDate: Friday 21 February 2025 \nTime: Talk at 13:30\, Activities until 16:00 \nLess than 35 years ago\, the only planets known to exist were those found within our own Solar System. From the first confirmed discovery in 1992 of a pair of exotic planets orbiting around a dead star\, the field of exoplanetary science (an exoplanet is a planet orbiting around another star) has undergone nothing short of a revolution. \nCurrently we stand at a staggering 6\,000 confirmed discoveries of planets outside our Solar System. We are at the dawn of a new age in exoplanet research with the Ariel mission due for launch in 2029\, becoming the leading space mission unveiling what the atmospheres of these exoplanets are made of. \nFollowing Dr Pearson’s fantastic talk\, we’ll move over to the RAL Visitor Centre for a whole range of hands-on activities – from making your own comet to handling real meteorites! \n\nMore information and booking\n\nTickets will be released at 19:30 on Friday 10 January. \nTickets for in-person events close the night before the event. If you would like to book an in-person last-minute place\, please email us at visitral@stfc.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Training Course: In-Situ Experiments & Digital Volume Correlation
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering theory and computer-based practical works using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D where two solutions are implemented. \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nDigital Volume Correlation (DVC) is a powerful experimental technique that computes 3D full-field displacement and strain maps from volumes images acquired during a deformation process of a material. DVC is the 3D extension of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) which was first described four decades ago. The emergence of DVC started early 2000s with the use of X-ray CT combined with in situ rigs to capture 3D morphological changes with time. Although the DVC algorithms are in spirit similar to DIC algorithms\, DVC requires special attention and expertise from multiple fields (3D imaging\, in situ testing\, CT reconstruction\, mechanics of materials\, etc.) as the texture is not controlled (natural contrast brought by imaging) and the noise/CT artefacts are often dominating the accuracy/precision of the measurements. Adding the 4th dimension (3D + time) also means that data processing and visualization are key to extract the mechanical information hidden inside the 4D datasets. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works (1.5 day) using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific™ Amira-Avizo Software 3D where two solutions are implemented (a classic subset based approach and a more robust global approach). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.
