SUMMARY:Harwell Campus Neurodiversity Group
DESCRIPTION:What makes us excel in industrial and academic environments? \nIndustry and academia. Two separate worlds. Are they though? Can the skills of an academic be valued in the money-driven world of business? Can industrial scientists find solace in the embrace of a university? What helps to excel in either of these environments for both neurodivergent and neurotypical candidates? This talk will answer these and more questions about university-industry and industry-university career transitions. \nOur speaker\, Krzysztof Herdzik\, earned his PhD in Optoelectronics from the University of Southampton in 202. He then spent five years at TRUMPF in Warwickshire\, where he developed components for high-power laser systems. Since January of this year\, he has been with WIKA Optical Sensing\, focusing on pressure and temperature sensing technologies for harsh and demanding environments. \nDate: Wednesday 18 June \nTime: 12:30 – 13:30 \nLocation: Ground Floor\, Quad Two\, Harwell Campus \nThis opportunity is open to both neurodiverse and neurotypical audiences to gain a deeper understanding of support available. \n\nRSVP your attendance here\n\nThis talk is brought to you by the members of The Rosie Project – a Harwell-based neurodiversity networking group. We aim to share best practice to enable neurodiverse teams to thrive in the workplace. We’re open to anyone with an interest\, whether or not you identify as neurodiverse. \nThe Rosie Project is open to everyone who has an interest in getting the best from their neurodivergent teams. We welcome neurotypicals and the inquisitive.

SUMMARY:Inside Diamond – In Person Public Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Our Inside Diamond open day events offer the chance for members of the public to visit the facility and see inside our particle accelerator and experimental laboratories. You will also meet some of the scientists that use Diamond and can ask them about the work they do – everything from viral proteins to engine parts and ancient texts. \nDate: Saturday 31 May 2025 \nThere are several starting times for the visits which you can select during the booking process: typically 09:30\, 11:00\, 12:45 and 14:15. \n\nClick here for ballot entry\n\nBallot entry closes at midnight on Sunday 27 April 2025. \nThese events are very popular and we have a limit on the number of visitors we can accommodate so we operate a ballot system to offer a fair allocation of spaces. For this reason\, only one entry is permitted per household. \nA typical visit will take approximately 2 – 2.5 hours and will consist of: \n\nAn introductory talk giving a general overview of Diamond and what it is used for.\nA guided tour – including a trip to see inside the synchrotron and our laboratories (please note that extensive walking will be involved).\nAn opportunity to talk to Diamond employees and ask them about their work and the facility.\n\nAdvice / Restrictions: \n\nDue to the size of the facility\, there will be extensive walking involved during the guided tour and as such\, we advise all visitors to wear comfortable footwear.\nDue to the nature of the facility\, we do not admit visitors under the age of 6 and we recommend that the visit is more suitable for adults and children aged 11+.\nThere are a few restrictions due to health and mobility issues\, although we ask that you inform us of any special requirements during registration so we can ensure suitable tour routes are available.\nPlease be aware that it can feel quite warm in the Synchrotron building so be prepared to remove extra layers/coats during tours.\n\n\nClick here for ballot entry\n\nBallot entry closes at midnight on Sunday 27 April 2025.

SUMMARY:Harwell Connect @ Rosalind Franklin Institute
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce the next host of the Harwell Connect event series: The Rosalind Franklin Institute. \nDate: Thursday 22 May \nTime: 15:00 – 16:30 \nJoin us to hear from Dr Michele Darrow who leads the Franklin’s new Quantitative Biology Across Scales Challenge\, and Chloe Cheng\, a final year Franklin PhD student who’s working with Dr Darrow on an interdisciplinary research project. \nThere’ll also be the opportunity to take a ‘window tour’ of the labs – your behind-the-scenes access to the areas where cutting-edge research takes place. \nWith time for networking and refreshments included\, this is a great opportunity to meet fellow campus members and discover the work of the Franklin. \n\nRSVP via the Member of the Future app\n\nThis event is open to campus members only. If you experience issues registering with the app\, contact the team here. \nAbout the speakers: \nDr Michele Darrow leads the Franklin’s new Quantitative Biology Across Scales Challenge. The aim of the challenge is to combine innovative imaging techniques and AI in ways that will allow researchers to flexibly image across large and small scales – from seeing whole organs to views of cells and the intricate structures within them – and with these\, to transform how doctors treat patients. They will initially be focussing their efforts on imaging the placenta and are interested in pursuing other research projects related to women’s health. \nChloe Cheng – The goal of her project is to study the developmental patterns and the structural/spatial distribution of mitochondria and synaptic vesicles in the hippocampus. Electron Microscopy (EM) and Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) are used to map and analyse these organelles\, and an automated pipeline combining citizen science and machine learning is developed to process the large and complex EM data. \n\nRSVP via the Member of the Future app\n\nAbout The Rosalind Franklin Institute: \nEstablished in 2018 by ten top UK universities\, The Rosalind Franklin Institute (RFI) is dedicated to developing tomorrow’s life science innovations through technology development and needle-point research. It creates disruptive technologies that can reveal the inner-workings of life\, from pea-sized tumours through to picometre-scale atoms. The state-of-the-art tools and projects accelerate the development of new medicines\, advance medical diagnostics and push forward the frontiers of microbiology to deepen out understanding of human health and disease. RFI collaborates with partners from across industry and science to ensure their critical research has a real impact in the world.

SUMMARY:Property Owner & Tenant Net Zero Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Zero Carbon Oxfordshire Partnership is joining forces with Better Buildings Partnership to host a workshop designed to help projects reach their Net Zero goals. \nDate: Wednesday 14 May \nTime: 09:30 – 13:00 \nVenue: Satellite Applications Catapult\, Harwell Campus \n\nRegister your interest\n\nOxfordshire has over 15 million sq.m of industrial and commercial buildings. \nMany of these properties are rented\, which creates additional challenges in making progress towards net zero buildings. While both landlords and tenants often share similar net zero ambitions\, the split incentive remains a major barrier: building owners covering the costs of energy efficiency upgrades\, while tenants benefit from lower energy bills. On top of this\, institutional\, technical\, and legal barriers often slow down or block progress altogether. \nThe agenda includes: \n\nBetter Buildings Partnership\, sharing their Green Lease Toolkit\, practical resource designed to help address common obstacles to upgrading rented commercial properties.\nCase studies from owners and tenants\nInsights into market trends\, incentives and drivers for taking action\nNetworking and knowledge exchange opportunities\n\nThis free event is open to Oxfordshire organisations who: \n\nOwn or manage commercial property\nAre leasing commercial or industrial space\n\nSpaces are limited – click the button to register your interest in attending this event. \n\nRegister your interest

SUMMARY:Launch break! Watch the groundbreaking Biomass launch live at ESA
DESCRIPTION:Take a break and come and watch the Biomass live launch in the convivial atmosphere of the ECSAT Conference Centre with a coffee and croissant in your hand. \nAt 10:15 am (TBC) on Tuesday 29 April\, ESA’s groundbreaking Biomass satellite will lift off on a Vega-C rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana. \nThe launch will be screened live in the main conference room with refreshments and mingling opportunities post-launch – the launch time/window being about 45 minutes. \nESA’s Biomass forest mission uses novel space technology to deliver new information about the state of our forests and how they are changing. Importantly\, the Biomass mission will further our knowledge of the role forests play in the carbon cycle\, and hence in the climate system. \nThe Biomass satellite is designed and built by a consortium of more than 50 companies under Airbus UK as the prime contractor. \nBiomass is also the first satellite to carry a radar instrument capable of penetrating the forest canopy to measure the biomass and height of forests consistently across the globe – and across different forest types. \n\nRegister your attendance on the campus app\n\nPlaces are limited and available on a first come\, first serve basis. Open to campus members only. Arrival from 10:00. \nIf you book a space and can no longer attend\, please cancel on the app or contact the team here to allow others to take your place. \nFind out more about Biomass here.

SUMMARY:Harwell Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Nominee for Readers’ Favourite Nonfiction (2023) in the Goodreads Choice Awards\, Doppelganger by Naomi Klein is the next book selected by the Book Club. \nWhat if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self – a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but\, in a twisted\, upside-down way\, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against? \nNot long ago\, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience – she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who. \nCombining comic memoir with chilling reportage and cobweb-clearing analysis\, Klein seeks to smash that mirror and chart a path beyond despair. \n\nWhat do we neglect as we polish and perfect our digital reflections?\nIs it possible to dispose of our doubles and overcome the pathologies of a culture of multiplication?\nCan we create a politics of collective care and undertake a true reckoning with historical crimes?\n\nThe result is a revelatory treatment of the way many of us think and feel now – and an intellectual adventure story for our times. \nIn collaboration with Be Free Young Carers\, we’ll be discussing Doppelganger on Tuesday 8th April at 12:15 in Quad Two. \n\nRSVP here\n\nHow It Works \nSign Up: Register to join the book club by Thursday 27th March (you may register after this date but we can’t guarantee a book). \nCollect Your Book: We’ll provide the book. Simply pick it up from Quad Two from Monday 17th March. \nRead & Discuss: You’ll have just shy of two weeks to read the book before we meet for our discussion over lunch in Quad Two on Tuesday 1st April. We’ll provide pizza\, or feel free to bring your own lunch. Each session will last for 45 minutes. \nAbout Be Free Young Carers: \nBased on campus\, Be Free Young Carers is the only charity in Oxfordshire dedicated to supporting children aged 8–17 with caregiving responsibilities for a family member. They’re passionate about learning and growing through books\, and can’t wait to connect with other readers on campus. \nThe book club will be led by Hannah\, one of their fundraisers. If you love discussing business and self-development books\, we want to see you there.

SUMMARY:Training Course: Advanced Scripting and Batching of Tomographic Datasets
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering Python scripting in Avizo (1 day) and development of Avizo Python module (1 day). \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nAlthough X-ray tomography is an attractive characterisation technique in materials science\, it generates a huge amount of data at a fast rate and it can be extremely time consuming to process the data manually. A great benefit to creating scripts and plugins in Avizo is the ability to reuse a workflow on more than one image or to develop a bespoke workflow for more complex materials. \nTake your skills to the next level and register for this course which focuses on how to develop Python scripts and plugins in Avizo. You will practise on real case studies and learn how to automate a workflow on multiple images\, transform Avizo objects into Numpy arrays (and vice versa)\, extend Avizo functionalities with powerful Python tools such as Simple ITK\, and develop your own plugin. \nThe training is organised in two parts: Pyhton scripting in Avizo (1 day) and development of Avizo Python module (1 day). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. The attendees are invited to bring their own laptop (an Avizo license will be provided for the training). \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.
