SUMMARY:The Light Reel Film Festival – Oppenheimer
DESCRIPTION:As part of our 80th anniversary celebrations\, we’re delighted to announce the Light Reel Film Festival\, featuring films inspired by the world-class science and technology on campus. \nEach film will feature an introduction from a leading scientist and be screened outside in The Quad\, complete with a covered tent\, giant screen\, and comfy seating. \nTo kick off\, we’ve got Oscar-winning epic Oppenheimer – Christopher Nolan’s gripping retelling of the man behind the atomic bomb. SUMMARY:Oppenheimer: Before and After – From a glass plate to the H-bomb
DESCRIPTION:If you saw the Oppenheimer movie\, here is the prequel\, and the story of what happened next. \nWas Marie Curie really the greatest female physicist of the early 20th century? Could the atomic energy contained in a gramme of radium really drive a ship across the Atlantic? Did a traffic light near the Royal Institution really give Leo Szilard his idea of the chain reaction? And was Oppenheimer really the “father of the atomic bomb”? \nThis talk reveals how Henry Becquerel’s accidental discovery\, in 1896\, of a faint smudge on a photographic plate sparked a chain of discoveries which would unleash the atomic age and reveals some of the myths that have grown around this saga. \nBased on Frank Close’s new book\, Destroyer of Worlds\, the talk is the story of how pursuit of this hidden source of atomic energy\, which began innocently and collaboratively\, was overwhelmed by the politics of the 1930s\, and following devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki opened the way to a still more terrible possibility: a thermonuclear bomb\, the so-called “backyard weapon”\, that could destroy all life on earth – from anywhere. \nDate: Tuesday 15th July \nTime: 18:00 – 19:00 \nVenue: Lightbox Cafe Bar\, Rutherford Avenue\, Harwell Campus \nFrank’s new book will be available for purchase at the talk. \nFood and drink will be available for purchase from the venue. \nTickets are required for this event and are open to all (including non-campus members). \n\nTickets available here\n\nAbout Frank Close: \nFrank Close is Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford. He was one time head of theory at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and head of communications and public education at CERN. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and winner of their Michael Faraday Prize for excellence in science communication in 2013. \nHe is the only professional scientist to have won the Association of British Science Writers Prize on 3 occasions. Author of 22 books on science including The Cosmic Onion\, Trinity\, and Elusive\, the story of the elusive Peter Higgs and his boson\, his latest book – Destroyer of Worlds\,  is the theme of today’s talk. \n\nTickets available here

SUMMARY:Harwell Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For the next Harwell Book Club in collaboration with Be Free Young Carers\, we’ll be discussing Be More Pirate by Sam Conniff. \nJoin us in Quad Two at 12:15 on Tuesday 15th July. \nBe More Pirate is a bold\, energetic call to arms that blends history with modern-day rebellion. Drawing on the radical tactics of Golden Age pirates – not just as swashbuckling criminals\, but as innovators\, disruptors\, and social reformers. By comparing pirate legends like Henry Morgan and Blackbeard with today’s rule-breakers such as Elon Musk\, Malala\, and Banksy\, Conniff builds a compelling case for rewriting the rules when the system is broken. \nPacked with mischief\, purpose\, and power\, the book urges readers to stop waiting for permission and start making meaningful change. It’s not about chaos for chaos’s sake – it’s about principled rebellion and the courage to challenge injustice. \n\nRSVP here\n\nHow It Works \nSign Up: Register to join the book club on the Member of the Future app by Tuesday 10th June (you may register after this date but we can’t guarantee a book). \nCollect Your Book: We’ll provide the book. SUMMARY:Harwell Campus Neurodiversity Group
DESCRIPTION:What makes us excel in industrial and academic environments? \nIndustry and academia. Two separate worlds. Are they though? Can the skills of an academic be valued in the money-driven world of business? Can industrial scientists find solace in the embrace of a university? What helps to excel in either of these environments for both neurodivergent and neurotypical candidates? This talk will answer these and more questions about university-industry and industry-university career transitions. \nOur speaker\, Krzysztof Herdzik\, earned his PhD in Optoelectronics from the University of Southampton in 202. He then spent five years at TRUMPF in Warwickshire\, where he developed components for high-power laser systems. Since January of this year\, he has been with WIKA Optical Sensing\, focusing on pressure and temperature sensing technologies for harsh and demanding environments. \nDate: Wednesday 18 June \nTime: 12:30 – 13:30 \nLocation: Ground Floor\, Quad Two\, Harwell Campus \nThis opportunity is open to both neurodiverse and neurotypical audiences to gain a deeper understanding of support available. \n\nRSVP your attendance here\n\nThis talk is brought to you by the members of The Rosie Project – a Harwell-based neurodiversity networking group. We aim to share best practice to enable neurodiverse teams to thrive in the workplace. We’re open to anyone with an interest\, whether or not you identify as neurodiverse. \nThe Rosie Project is open to everyone who has an interest in getting the best from their neurodivergent teams. We welcome neurotypicals and the inquisitive.

SUMMARY:Harwell Connect @ Rosalind Franklin Institute
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to announce the next host of the Harwell Connect event series: The Rosalind Franklin Institute. \nDate: Thursday 22 May \nTime: 15:00 – 16:30 \nJoin us to hear from Dr Michele Darrow who leads the Franklin’s new Quantitative Biology Across Scales Challenge\, and Chloe Cheng\, a final year Franklin PhD student who’s working with Dr Darrow on an interdisciplinary research project. \nThere’ll also be the opportunity to take a ‘window tour’ of the labs – your behind-the-scenes access to the areas where cutting-edge research takes place. \nWith time for networking and refreshments included\, this is a great opportunity to meet fellow campus members and discover the work of the Franklin. \n\nRSVP via the Member of the Future app\n\nThis event is open to campus members only. If you experience issues registering with the app\, contact the team here. \nAbout the speakers: \nDr Michele Darrow leads the Franklin’s new Quantitative Biology Across Scales Challenge. The aim of the challenge is to combine innovative imaging techniques and AI in ways that will allow researchers to flexibly image across large and small scales – from seeing whole organs to views of cells and the intricate structures within them – and with these\, to transform how doctors treat patients. They will initially be focussing their efforts on imaging the placenta and are interested in pursuing other research projects related to women’s health. \nChloe Cheng – The goal of her project is to study the developmental patterns and the structural/spatial distribution of mitochondria and synaptic vesicles in the hippocampus. Electron Microscopy (EM) and Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) are used to map and analyse these organelles\, and an automated pipeline combining citizen science and machine learning is developed to process the large and complex EM data. \n\nRSVP via the Member of the Future app\n\nAbout The Rosalind Franklin Institute: \nEstablished in 2018 by ten top UK universities\, The Rosalind Franklin Institute (RFI) is dedicated to developing tomorrow’s life science innovations through technology development and needle-point research. It creates disruptive technologies that can reveal the inner-workings of life\, from pea-sized tumours through to picometre-scale atoms. The state-of-the-art tools and projects accelerate the development of new medicines\, advance medical diagnostics and push forward the frontiers of microbiology to deepen out understanding of human health and disease. RFI collaborates with partners from across industry and science to ensure their critical research has a real impact in the world.

Super inspiring stuff! \n\nRSVP here\n\nHow It Works \nSign Up: Register to join the book club by Tuesday 6th May (you may register after this date but we can’t guarantee a book). \nCollect Your Book: We’ll provide the book. Simply pick it up from Quad Two reception from Friday 18th April. \nRead & Discuss: You’ll have about a month to read the book before we meet for our discussion over lunch in Quad Two on Tuesday 20th May. We’ll provide pizza\, or feel free to bring your own lunch. Each session will last for 45 minutes. \nAbout Be Free Young Carers: \nBased on campus\, Be Free Young Carers is the only charity in Oxfordshire dedicated to supporting children aged 8–17 with caregiving responsibilities for a family member. They’re passionate about learning and growing through books\, and can’t wait to connect with other readers on campus. \nThe book club will be led by Hannah\, one of their fundraisers. If you love discussing business and self-development books\, we want to see you there.

SUMMARY:Property Owner & Tenant Net Zero Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Zero Carbon Oxfordshire Partnership is joining forces with Better Buildings Partnership to host a workshop designed to help projects reach their Net Zero goals. \nDate: Wednesday 14 May \nTime: 09:30 – 13:00 \nVenue: Satellite Applications Catapult\, Harwell Campus \n\nRegister your interest\n\nOxfordshire has over 15 million sq.m of industrial and commercial buildings. \nMany of these properties are rented\, which creates additional challenges in making progress towards net zero buildings. While both landlords and tenants often share similar net zero ambitions\, the split incentive remains a major barrier: building owners covering the costs of energy efficiency upgrades\, while tenants benefit from lower energy bills. On top of this\, institutional\, technical\, and legal barriers often slow down or block progress altogether. \nThe agenda includes: \n\nBetter Buildings Partnership\, sharing their Green Lease Toolkit\, practical resource designed to help address common obstacles to upgrading rented commercial properties.\nCase studies from owners and tenants\nInsights into market trends\, incentives and drivers for taking action\nNetworking and knowledge exchange opportunities\n\nThis free event is open to Oxfordshire organisations who: \n\nOwn or manage commercial property\nAre leasing commercial or industrial space\n\nSpaces are limited – click the button to register your interest in attending this event. \n\nRegister your interest

SUMMARY:AI Networking Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an AI and Machine Learning networking breakfast\, hosted by members of the scientific community from across the campus. \nDate: Wednesday 7th May 2025 \nTime: 08:40 – 09:30 \nHarwell Campus is a unique environment where science and technology converge. Groups like the Scientific Computing Division (SCD) regularly collaborate with the UK’s central facilities\, including the Central Laser Facility\, Diamond Light Source\, and ISIS Neutron and Muon Source. This integration has spurred the development of many AI and ML tools specifically for the scientific community. \nAs more companies are drawn to the campus\, beyond the core UK government-funded projects\, it’s the perfect time to come together to discuss the tools and technologies being developed\, explore potential collaborations\, and chart the future direction at the intersection of science and technology. \nWe invite you to join us to learn more about ongoing projects\, share your experiences\, and connect with like-minded colleagues. \nImage created by DALL-E 3 (ChatGPT) \n\nBook on the Member of the Future app
