SUMMARY:Training Course: Visualisation & Quantification of Tomographic Datasets
DESCRIPTION:A 2-day training course covering theory and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software. \nDate: Thursday 18 September – Friday 19 September 2025 \nTime: 09:00 – 17:00 \nVenue: Hamilton Room\, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Visitor Centre\, Harwell Campus \nCost: £400 +VAT for academics\, students\, postdocs and government\, £800 +VAT for industry. \nLab/synchrotron X-ray tomography has emerged as one of the most important techniques for research in a wide range of applications including healthcare\, energy\, food and geology. Advances in the quality of X-ray beams\, optics\, high speed data acquisition and in-situ environments have made significant improvements to non-destructive imaging of a specimen structure in 3D and over a wide range of length scales (micron-and nanoscales). Although the direct benefit of X-ray tomography is the 3D visualisation of the internal structure of specimens\, which is very valuable to understand the structure/function relationships\, the technique has however a lot more to offer. The information is hidden in the data and robust methods and workflows are needed to extract it in a relevant and accurate way\, and make it readily available for decision making. \nThis training course is organised by The University of Manchester at Harwell and 3Dmagination Ltd. It is aimed at researchers working in the field of mechanics\, physics\, chemistry\, biology and materials science using 3D imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography\, and who are interested to acquire solid methods for visualising and extracting relevant scientific information from 3D tomographic data. \nThe training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works using the Thermo Scientific Amira-Avizo Software 3D (1.5 day). At the end of the second day\, the users are invited to practise on their own dataset with the help of the trainers. The attendees are invited to bring their own laptop (an Avizo license will be provided for the training). \n  \n\nRegister here\n\n  \nCourses generally fill up very quickly and places are allocated on a first come first serve basis. If there is low attendance\, a course may be cancelled with a month’s notice.

SUMMARY:Didcot Café Scientifique – Dr Chris Pearson “The Life of an Atom”
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered where the carbon in our bodies\, the oxygen in the air or the gold in your jewellery come from? \nThe people and things we see around us mark the end of a long journey of constant recycling and reincarnation. Everyone has probably seen the new-age car bumper sticker “We are all made of Stardust” and it’s true that at some point in the past of cosmic history\, our atoms were forged in the hearts of stars. However\, that isn’t quite the origin story and this talk will take us on a journey from the earliest cosmic times to the present. \nEverything we see around us was originally created in its simplest form\, a Hydrogen atom\, in the creation event\, the Big Bang\, at the start of the Universe at the beginning of time. From this point\, these simple particles have journeyed through space and time\, undergoing a metamorphosis that has resulted in the world that we see around us and human beings themselves. \nDate: Tuesday 16th September \nTime: 19:30 – 21:00 \nVenue: Cornerstone Arts Centre\, Didcot \nCost: £4.50 (Under 18s free) \n\nMore info and tickets\n\nSpeaker Biography: \nDr Chris Pearson is head of Astronomy at RAL Space on Harwell Campus. His PhD was in “Galaxy Evolution and Cosmology” with Prof. Michael Rowan-Robinson at Imperial College\, London\, and has worked on large galaxy surveys for both ground-based telescopes and space-borne missions. \nHe worked for 7 years in Japan on the AKARI space telescope before moving to the UK to RAL Space to work on the SPIRE instrument on the Herschel Space Observatory where he led the team that produced all the nice images from the mission. \nHe now works on the ARIEL mission searching for exoplanets and the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope\, the largest scientific facility ever to be built.

SUMMARY:Oppenheimer: Before and After – From a glass plate to the H-bomb
DESCRIPTION:If you saw the Oppenheimer movie\, here is the prequel\, and the story of what happened next. \nWas Marie Curie really the greatest female physicist of the early 20th century? Could the atomic energy contained in a gramme of radium really drive a ship across the Atlantic? Did a traffic light near the Royal Institution really give Leo Szilard his idea of the chain reaction? And was Oppenheimer really the “father of the atomic bomb”? \nThis talk reveals how Henry Becquerel’s accidental discovery\, in 1896\, of a faint smudge on a photographic plate sparked a chain of discoveries which would unleash the atomic age and reveals some of the myths that have grown around this saga. \nBased on Frank Close’s new book\, Destroyer of Worlds\, the talk is the story of how pursuit of this hidden source of atomic energy\, which began innocently and collaboratively\, was overwhelmed by the politics of the 1930s\, and following devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki opened the way to a still more terrible possibility: a thermonuclear bomb\, the so-called “backyard weapon”\, that could destroy all life on earth – from anywhere. \nDate: Tuesday 15th July \nTime: 18:00 – 19:00 \nVenue: Lightbox Cafe Bar\, Rutherford Avenue\, Harwell Campus \nFrank’s new book will be available for purchase at the talk. \nFood and drink will be available for purchase from the venue. \nTickets are required for this event and are open to all (including non-campus members). \n\nTickets available here\n\nAbout Frank Close: \nFrank Close is Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford. He was one time head of theory at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and head of communications and public education at CERN. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and winner of their Michael Faraday Prize for excellence in science communication in 2013. \nHe is the only professional scientist to have won the Association of British Science Writers Prize on 3 occasions. Author of 22 books on science including The Cosmic Onion\, Trinity\, and Elusive\, the story of the elusive Peter Higgs and his boson\, his latest book – Destroyer of Worlds\,  is the theme of today’s talk. \n\nTickets available here

SUMMARY:Harwell Book Club
DESCRIPTION:For the next Harwell Book Club in collaboration with Be Free Young Carers\, we’ll be discussing Be More Pirate by Sam Conniff. \nJoin us in Quad Two at 12:15 on Tuesday 15th July. \nBe More Pirate is a bold\, energetic call to arms that blends history with modern-day rebellion. Drawing on the radical tactics of Golden Age pirates – not just as swashbuckling criminals\, but as innovators\, disruptors\, and social reformers. By comparing pirate legends like Henry Morgan and Blackbeard with today’s rule-breakers such as Elon Musk\, Malala\, and Banksy\, Conniff builds a compelling case for rewriting the rules when the system is broken. \nPacked with mischief\, purpose\, and power\, the book urges readers to stop waiting for permission and start making meaningful change. It’s not about chaos for chaos’s sake – it’s about principled rebellion and the courage to challenge injustice. \n\nRSVP here\n\nHow It Works \nSign Up: Register to join the book club on the Member of the Future app by Tuesday 10th June (you may register after this date but we can’t guarantee a book). \nCollect Your Book: We’ll provide the book. SUMMARY:Harwell Campus Neurodiversity Group
DESCRIPTION:What makes us excel in industrial and academic environments? \nIndustry and academia. Two separate worlds. Are they though? Can the skills of an academic be valued in the money-driven world of business? Can industrial scientists find solace in the embrace of a university? What helps to excel in either of these environments for both neurodivergent and neurotypical candidates? This talk will answer these and more questions about university-industry and industry-university career transitions. \nOur speaker\, Krzysztof Herdzik\, earned his PhD in Optoelectronics from the University of Southampton in 202. He then spent five years at TRUMPF in Warwickshire\, where he developed components for high-power laser systems. Since January of this year\, he has been with WIKA Optical Sensing\, focusing on pressure and temperature sensing technologies for harsh and demanding environments. \nDate: Wednesday 18 June \nTime: 12:30 – 13:30 \nLocation: Ground Floor\, Quad Two\, Harwell Campus \nThis opportunity is open to both neurodiverse and neurotypical audiences to gain a deeper understanding of support available. \n\nRSVP your attendance here\n\nThis talk is brought to you by the members of The Rosie Project – a Harwell-based neurodiversity networking group. We aim to share best practice to enable neurodiverse teams to thrive in the workplace. We’re open to anyone with an interest\, whether or not you identify as neurodiverse. \nThe Rosie Project is open to everyone who has an interest in getting the best from their neurodivergent teams. We welcome neurotypicals and the inquisitive.
