Harwell Innovation Centre, on the Harwell Oxford Campus near Didcot, opened in 2000 with support from the UK Atomic Energy Authority. The site has a long history of scientific innovation and entrepreneurship stretching back to its foundation as an airbase during World War II, when it was the test site for several military innovations. Under the UK Atomic Energy Authority, the site became the centre of the civil nuclear program, with over 6,000 people working there in the late 1950s.
Today, the campus has been rebranded as Harwell and is being developed by a joint venture between the UK Atomic Energy Authority, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Prorsus Ltd and Development Securities Plc. Harwell is a world leading hub for science, technology and business, boasting a unique combination of businesses focusing on Space & Satellite Applications, Life Sciences & Healthcare, Big Data & Supercomputing, Energy & Environment and Advanced Engineering and Materials sectors. In this innovation ecosystem, established academics and entrepreneurial start-ups, big science and big business all work side by side, supported by world class scientific facilities.
